First flowers and spring is on our doorstep
August is the perfect time for:
Supplement water (dry ground and winds)- Fertilise (on wet soil)
- Consider delaying pruning, planting and fertilisation until good rain can be expected
- Prune common hedges (buxus, lilly pilly, murraya, viburnum, photinia, pittosporum)
- Many summer flowering shrubs can be pruned now
- Summer flowering heat-loving can be delayed till warmer (allamanda, cordylines)
- Prune hibiscus mid to late
- Prune and fertilise (camellias and azaleas) after flowering (for compact tip prune once or twice)
- Done prune winter and early spring bloomers (gardenia, bottle burhs, yesterday today tomorrow)
- Prune roses not done in july (except once flowering)
- Fertilise rose end august
- Divide clumping perenials (agapanthus, day lilies, dietes, iris, liriope, mondo grass, society garlic, walking iris, gigners)
- Deadhead winter flowers
- Winter and spring flowers may benefit soluable fertilisers ever 1-2 weeks
- Control bindii
- Alert for pests
- Finish construction and reapir jobs
